Balloon Popping …..Bang, Bang….
When I got this assignment, I thought someone had put a little of the good stuff in my boss’ coffee. It didn’t take long for me to learn that everyone reacts the same, but differently when it comes to hearing a balloon pop. Believe it or not there are pages and pages on the net about balloon popping. There are video’s from You Tube with reactions to balloon popping. There is even an old video or film, showing a man with a rather old fashioned hair style, dressed in a suit and tie blowing up a balloon, when it suddenly pops. The expression on his face is priceless and the narrative that goes along with this video is almost as outdated as that hair do.
We’ve all experienced that moment when a balloon pops when we least expect it. It is startling, loud, and if you really want to get dramatic, it can even sound like a gun shot. Balloon popping is not my idea of a good pass time, yet some people obviously have taken time to record reactions on film and video; who knew?
Animals seem to be just a skittish when it comes to balloon popping. All it takes is for one balloon to pop and they run for cover. I experienced this with my brave chinpoo, who ran for cover when I was doing my research. She still won’t get next to the bag with the left over balloons and runs under the bed every time I even get close to that bag. Of course I’m not saying she is the bravest thing in the world, but she will bark her head off if she thinks someone is getting too close to my aura, except if he has a balloon in his hand.
I did several experiments, if you will, on balloon popping, and was surprised with some of the results. When I popped a balloon, and I knew it was going to pop, I still jumped, and I wasn’t the only one that had this same reaction. Even when you know the balloon is about to pop you still jump, it is really amazing to watch the reaction. I tried these experiments on several people including adults, as well as children. Each time the reactions ranged from jumping, loud gasps, and other expletives, nervous laughter, and screaming.
One of my test subjects bet me that he could sit in a chair with no reaction to a balloon popping. We tried our little experiment two different ways; once with the balloon in back of his head, so he couldn’t see when I was about to pop the balloon, and again in front of him so he could watch the pin coming close to the balloon. Of course this was very scientific and we spent some time setting up the arena. The results: I have a five dollar bill in my pocket, courtesy of balloon popping and I still gloat every time I see my friend.
